Among the race teams to watch in the 2019 Rolex 24 at Daytona is Mazda Team Joest and its pair of Mazda DPi prototypes. In the ''ROAR Before the 24'' qualifying session a few weeks ago, Oliver Jarvis, driving the No. 77 Mazda, unofficially set a new track record at Daytona. In official qualifying Thursday, Jarvis again set a new track record with a time of 1:33.685, putting the No. 77 Mazda DPi on the pole for the 2019 Rolex 24 at Daytona.
In the GT Daytona class, the car to watch is the No. 57 Heinricher Racing Acura NSX GT3, driven by the all-female driver team of Katherine Legge, Simona de Silvestro, Bia Figueiredo and Christina Nielsen. The team will run the entire IMSA schedule, not just the Rolex 24 at Daytona.
Notable drivers in the field:
Fernando Alonso
Juan Pablo Montoya
Kamui Kobayashi
Rubens Barrichello
Pastor Maldonado
Felipe Nasr
Alex Zanardi
Ryan Briscoe
Scott Dixon
If you’re new to endurance racing, you might be wondering why there’s so many different cars on the track. There are four classes of cars, meaning there’s four separate races going on simultaneously for 24 hours. Daytona Prototype international (DPi) and Le Mans Prototype 2 (LMP2) are the fastest cars on the track, followed by GT Le Mans (GTLM) and GT Daytona (GTD). Each team has a lineup of four drivers that take turns racing shifts.
