Horsebox Insurance for Under 25's |

In the equestrian world, horseboxes are the preferred method of transportation when transporting horses from their stable to competition and showground sites. Horseboxes, in addition to being a method of transport are an investment used to protect your prized and cherished stock. Whether your horsebox is simply a trailer which you tow behind your vehicle or it is a specifically designed lorry which you use to transport your horse you by law are required to have insurance. Generally, trailers are not covered under regular your vehicle insurance. If indeed your policy does allow for a trailer it will likely be for a very lightweight and low-duty trailer and will certainly not be the tonnage that you will need for towing a horsebox. Drivers that are under age 25 have always traditionally had problems getting both horsebox and horse-trailer insurance. On a standard vehicle driving license, an under-25 can tow a 3.5 tonne trailer or drive a 7.5 tonne horse lorry. Sometimes you will need to add a 7.5 tonne endorsement to your license if you do not have one already. There are no additional mandated tests to drive vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes. Most often, specialist horsebox insurance companies will understand the risks will offer under 25’s lower premiums, providing of course they have no points on their license. In addition, a good insurer will allow you to transfer a no-claims bonus that you have built up on a domestic vehicle to a motorized horsebox or a large trailer that you may use to transport horses. Restricted Mileage Sometimes horsebox drivers that are under 25 can save some money by agreeing to have a ‘Restricted Mileage’ clause added to their policy. If you only use your horsebox occasionally, this may be worth looking into. In short, the way this type of policy works is you set a limit to the annual miles that you anticipate driving, and providing that you don’t go over this amount, you will save a little on your premium. A few things that are important to remember. (Even if you’re over 25)
